The Mexican Caribbean

Cancun and Quintana Roo’s coastal areas have experienced rapid tourism expansion since the 1970s, transforming them into world-renowned destinations.

While this growth has benefited the local economy, it also places considerable stress on the marine ecosystems, which are central to the area’s allure. This situation underscores the critical need for constant monitoring to better understand these ecosystems.

This understanding is not only crucial for formulating regulations to ensure their conservation but also for creating new and sustainable tourism practices.Such practices are essential to foster economic prosperity while protecting the vital natural habitats.

“Our community depends on tourism,
our tourism depends on the marine ecosystems.
ecosystems are threatened by massive tourism.”

ACTIONS

Conservation is a collective effort that requires everyone. Each person has a unique role to play. At Ocean World of Sound, we’re creating opportunities for people to engage and contribute.

Over the past three years, we’ve developed talks, conferences, and workshops in various formats to engage different community members. These initiatives teach skills such as active listening and provide tools to foster a deeper connection with their marine ecosystems.

Most recently, we established a Citizen Science group. This group collaborates with us by analyzing underwater acoustic data, which aids in understanding the Mesoamerican Reef.
